The College’s Enterprise office assists staff and students across all areas of the College in planning and running enterprise activities. This can include standalone events, such as enterprise competitions, trade fairs and business simulation activities, as well as, working with individuals and departments to further include enterprise in what they already do.
We are keen to develop enterprise skills in our students so that they are well-equipped to enter the employment world, whether that is working for themselves or for someone else. The skills that successful entrepreneurs possess are also important skills for employees - the ability to come up with ideas and to think creatively about situations; having the confidence to have a go at things; the drive and determination to see things through; a positive ‘can-do’ attitude; enhanced communication skills and the ability to work well with others. These are all skills that students can develop by being more enterprising and taking part in enterprise activities.
Many of our students set-up and run their own enterprise companies under the Young Enterprise banner. (Young Enterprise is a national education charity that gives young people the opportunity to learn about enterprise through actually doing it for themselves). Some of the enterprises that have been set-up this year include a car valeting company, a tuck shop and a student magazine to name but a few.
Being involved in enterprise activity may also provide the social interaction that enhances many young people’s education, allowing them to make a valuable contribution and to feel that they belong to something.
We also have close links with the local business support network and can help a student who has a business idea or would like to start their own business.
