School of Social Studies and Languages

The School offers a range of 16 A Level subjects across the Neath and Afan campuses. The subjects include Accounting, Communication Studies, Economics, English Language, English Language and Literature, English Literature, French, German, Government and Politics, History, Law, Psychology, Religious Studies, Sociology, Spanish and Welsh.

In addition to A Levels our students are also able to study the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma Qualification. The College is proud to be one of the first cohort of pilot centres approved to deliver this new exciting qualification, where students have the opportunity to broaden their A Level programme of study – a feature welcomed by employers and universities.

The courses are delivered by experienced staff including A Level examiners across many subjects. There has been significant investment in teaching resources including electronic whiteboards which enable state-of-the-art teaching methods. Our language laboratories boast the most up-to-date equipment for linguistic teaching and have proved to be very popular with students. Language students are also given the extra support of assistants who are native speakers.

Examination results are amongst the best in Wales and in recent years, in addition to overall results, individual students have gained truly outstanding achievements including five and six grade As at A Level, leading to progression to Oxford University. Our students benefit from an Oxbridge support programme which includes visits to Oxford coupled with interview advice from current Oxford students. The Oxford visits are an established annual event and we always look forward to meeting up with our former students.

Student support is second to none, with all students allocated a personal tutor with whom they meet for at least one and half hours each week throughout year one of their studies. During year two university application support is a major priority and our students are consistently accepted at the top universities in England and Wales.

The School of Social Studies and Languages prides itself on outstanding examination results, a friendly and supportive culture and a focus on students’ needs. It provides a friendly, caring environment with high expectations at all times.
