Learner Services

Learner Services are located at both the Neath and Afan campuses. Student advisers are on hand to offer advice and guidance on a wide range of personal, social, financial and academic issues. Our friendly staff are always available to discuss any concerns or worries you may have.

 

Learner Services have resources to help you make decisions about your future, whether you are considering the world of work, applying for higher education or looking for ‘year out’ ideas.

 

Your views matter and we actively seek student views and opinions throughout the academic year.

 

Financial Matters

Students may be able to apply for funding to help with the cost of learning.

 

There are two main sources of support available:

  • Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) - A weekly payment of up to £30 is available for eligible students aged 16-18. EMA is payable subject to satisfactory attendance and performance

  • Assembly Learning Grant (ALG) - Available to eligible students aged 19 or over.

There is also the Student Support Fund, a discretionary fund administered by the College. This may help with transport costs, meals, course-related equipment, clothing and childcare. Application forms can be obtained from Learner Services. Please note that funds are limited, so early application is essential. Funds are awarded on a 'first come first served' basis.

 

Financial support and advice is also available for students intending to go on to full- or part-time Higher Education. Careers

The College works in close partnership with Careers Wales West. Careers Advisers link in with your personal tutorials to give advice and guidance on future courses and/or further career aspirations. Careers Advisers are available Monday-Friday during term time. You can make individual appointments by calling into Student Services or by calling Debbie James-Haley 01639 635306 or Michele David 01639 648418 (Neath campus) or Alison O'Leary on 01639 648227 (Afan campus).

Counselling

Counselling is the simple process of talking to an experienced listener about difficulties that are concerning or affecting you. Counsellors create a safe place in which you are free to explore your feelings and thoughts openly. These issues may be in the here and now or in the past.

 

About your Counsellor

The College counsellor is professionally qualified and has extensive experience in a wide variety of areas. The counsellor works to a specified professional Code of Ethics & Practice, namely the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP). The Counsellor is available to see both full- and part-time students throughout the year and is based in Learner Services:

  • Monday to Thursdays 8:30am-5pm
  • Fridays 8:30am-4.30pm.

(Some evening appointments are available at certain times)

Designated Contact for Looked After Children and Care Leavers 

The College’s designated person is Heather Turner who is based in the Learner Services Department. Heather provides advice, guidance, support and advocacy for all looked after children and care leavers and can be contacted on 01639 648376.

 

Designated Contact for Safeguarding

The College’s designated person is Adele Ottilie-Jones (Tel: 01639 648060). The deputy designated person is Debra Bennett (Tel: 01639 648414).  


Personal Tutors and Course Co-ordinators

Many subject lecturers are also personal tutors and/or course co-ordinators for individuals and groups of student. Each full-time A/AS Level student is assigned to a personal tutor and each vocational student becomes the responsibility of a course co-ordinator. The tutor is the first port-of-call for students to discuss any issues/concerns they may have. One of their jobs is to keep you informed and help you look after your personal, social and academic welfare in College.

 

The friendly Learner Services team is also readily available to support students with any concerns/worries that may arise. They will endeavour to ensure you enjoy a happy and successful time whilst you are studying.

 

Subject Lecturers

Your subject lecturer will teach, guide, help and motivate you to enable you to acquire the essential knowledge, study skills and attitudes to allow you to progress.

 

Principal Lecturer (Students and Support)

The principal lecturer, together with your personal tutor/course co-ordinator, will support you with any issues that could affect your studies including personal problems. The principal lecturers can help in many ways including:

  • Talking to you to see how they can help
  • Getting in touch with the right people for you (e.g. learning coaches, careers advisers, counsellor etc)
  • Supporting you through your difficult time (whether this is course related or difficulties you may be facing at home)
  • Talking to your parents/guardians
  • Discussing the best way forward if you think you have chosen the wrong course
  • Getting you ‘back on track’ if you have fallen behind with work.

 

Learning Coaches

If you feel that you need extra support to complete your studies, you can receive this from your learning coach. He/she can guide and support you through any problems you may have, and help you make the most of your time in College.

 

Safer Learning

You have the right to feel safe. Other people should not hurt or abuse you. The welfare of students is of paramount importance.

 

Confidentiality Statement

Confidentiality in dealing with student issues is respected at NPTC. However, there are certain circumstances in which confidentiality cannot be guaranteed. These are:

  • if you are under 18 or a ‘vulnerable adult’ and the issue discussed involves any form of abuse
  • you are over 18 and the issue discussed involves abuse and there are younger siblings in contact with the abuser who may be at risk
  • If you disclose an intent to harm others or yourself.
